The NFL is dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak and more positive tests are still being registered. On Monday, the Washington Football Team announced they had placed All-Pro offensive guard Brandon Scherff on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Washington already saw its Week 15 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles be moved from Sunday to Tuesday night due to the outbreak. With the addition of Scherff, Washington has 16 players on its reserve/COVID-19 list. Scherff is one of Washington’s most important players to be placed on the new list, along with quarterbacks Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen.
The NFL recently updated its protocols so that vaccinated players could return more quickly to the field. This means we aren’t sure who could return for Washington’s matchup just yet. The Cleveland Browns also had both of their top two quarterbacks placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, but both reportedly failed to test out of protocols in time to be elevated to the active roster for their Monday afternoon game vs. the Las Vegas Raiders.
Scherff was originally selected by Washington with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. The four-time Pro Bowler and First Team All-Pro is playing his second season in a row on the franchise tag, and has been one of Washington’s most consistent players. Without him in the starting lineup, this already banged-up unit could struggle to pave lanes for Antonio Gibson, or keep whoever is playing quarterback upright.
