Tyrod Taylor officially named Texans’ Week 1 starter as Deshaun Watson expected to be inactive

The Houston Texans officially have their starting quarterback. On Monday, head coach David Culley confirmed that veteran Tyrod Taylor will be the team’s starter under center when they begin the 2021 season at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars. This announcement comes after Taylor acknowledged as recently as last week that he hadn’t officially been told whether or not he was the team’s starter. Well, not only does Taylor now know but so does the rest of the NFL-watching world. 

Taylor signed with Houston in March and it was widely assumed that he’d be named the starter to begin the year, so Culley’s announcement on Monday was really a formality. 

Of course, this all comes as Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson — who led the NFL in passing yards last season — sits on the backburner of the team’s roster. Watson is facing 22 ongoing civil lawsuits by 22 different women that allege the quarterback of sexual misconduct. On top of those charges and a possible suspension by the NFL, Watson has also been insistent that he is traded away from the Texans organization, so his future with the team is very much uncertain.

Last week, a report surfaced that Watson would make the team’s opening 53-man roster — which he has — but the Texans are prepared to label him inactive every week. If that does ultimately occur, Houston would still have to pay Watson his base salary of $10.54 million. As for a trade, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported last week that any chatter surrounding Watson being moved at the moment is “hot air,” calling any leaks “strategic spit-balling.” 

As this relates to Taylor, he’ll likely be the team’s starter for the foreseeable future. He’s started 47 games throughout his career and boasts a 24-21-1 record over that stretch. Over his entire time in the NFL, Taylor has completed 61.4% of his passes and has a passer rating of 89.5. 

The Texans and Jaguars will kick off their 2021 season from NRG Stadium at 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
