Written by on October 21, 2021

The Cleveland Browns (3-3) will look for just their second win in their last 14 games against the Denver Broncos (3-3) when they meet in on Thursday Night Football. The Browns last beat the Broncos in 2018, when they posted a 17-16 win at Denver. Cleveland has not beaten the Broncos at home since a 16-13 triumph in 1989. Denver is coming off a 34-24 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, while Cleveland was beaten 37-14 by the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday. The Browns will be without quarterback Baker Mayfield (shoulder) and starting running backs Nick Chubb (calf) and Kareem Hunt (calf).

Why the Browns can cover

Cleveland will be without the services of quarterback Baker Mayfield (shoulder) and running backs Kareem Hunt (calf) and Nick Chubb (calf). The Browns will turn to veteran Case Keenum at quarterback and the duo of D’Ernest Johnson and Demetric Felton at running back. Keenum has proven multiple times during his career that he can be a starting-caliber quarterback in the NFL.

The Browns have one of the premier defenses in the league. They will rely on the duo of Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney to wreck havoc on a struggling Denver offensive line. If the Cleveland pass rush can create early pressure on quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, the Broncos could be in for a long night.

Why the Broncos can cover

Running back Javonte Williams has been the perfect complement to Melvin Gordon and is second among rookie running backs with 300 yards rushing. He has had three explosive plays of 20 or more yards and one touchdown. He has also converted 15 first downs. In Sunday’s loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, he carried 11 times for 53 yards, including a long of 30 yards. His best game was a 13-carry, 64-yard performance in a Week 2 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Also leading the offense is wide receiver Courtland Sutton, who had eight catches for 94 yards and one touchdown last week. He looks for his third game in a row with seven or more catches and 90 or more receiving yards. In his last meeting against the Browns, Sutton had five catches for 56 yards and a touchdown. Sutton has seen double-digit targets in Denver’s last two games and has produced at a Pro Bowl caliber level.
