Getty’s George Walker Rookie quarterback Davis Mills took the field for the Houston Texans ‘ first second-half series against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. It was learned that veteran Tyrod Taylor suffered a hamstring injury in the first half. He’s out for the remainder of the game.
It’s unclear exactly when Taylor suffered the injury. He limped off the field after giving Houston a 14-7 lead with a 15-yard scramble on the team’s second-to-last drive of the first half. Then on the final series, he threw the ball away to avoid contact and came up hobbled . It went a bit unnoticed at the time because the drive came to end shortly thereafter with a punt.
The veteran’s injury luck has been very unfortunate the past few seasons. An injury led Baker Mayfield to take over for Taylor as a member of the Browns in 2018. He was then slated to start last season for the Chargers until a team doctor accidentally punctured his lung prior to kickoff of a Week 2 game against the Chiefs in 2020.
He signed with the Texans as a free agent this offseason. In Week 1, Taylor led Houston to a 37-21 thumping of Jacksonville. He completed 21-of-33 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
Mills is a third-round pick out of Stanford. He completed 129-of-195 passes for 1,508 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions in a pandemic-shortened season for the Cardinal last year. The Georgia native also had three rushing touchdowns.
