Tom Brady appeared in five of the last seven Super Bowls before announcing his retirement following the 2021 NFL season. Apparently, he planned on playing in another one on Sunday. Days after leaving the door open for a future comeback, the 44-year-old quarterback stirred up Twitter on Sunday afternoon, posting a screenshot of a calendar reminder for Super Bowl LVI.
Is he hinting further at a return to football? Is he just upset he and the Buccaneers didn’t make it back to the big game? Does he wish he wouldn’t have set the reminder, getting his hopes up about winning a record eighth championship? It’s anyone’s guess, but Brady chiming in at all has already reignited speculation of the QB’s future. Several former teammates, including Patriots running back Brandon Bolden and Bucs tight end Rob Gronkowski, have said recently they believe Brady will eventually come back to the NFL. Brady himself, meanwhile, left all options on the table in an appearance on his “Let’s Go!” podcast this offseason.
“You know, I’m just gonna take things as they come,” Brady said. “I think that’s the best way to put it, and … you never say never. At the same time, I know that … I feel very good about my decision. I don’t know how I’ll feel six months from now … It most likely won’t (change). But I try to make the best possible decision I can in the moment, which I did this last week. And, again, I think it’s not looking to reverse course; I’m definitely not looking to do that. But (at) the same time, I think you have to be realistic that you never know what challenges there are gonna be in life.”
