Sunday Night Football odds, spread, line: Packers vs. 49ers picks, predictions by expert on 43-13 roll

Written by on September 26, 2021

The Green Bay Packers are hoping for better results away from Lambeau Field when they take on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football. The Packers (1-1) struggled in the season-opener against the New Orleans Saints in Jacksonville, losing 38-3, before rebounding at home with a 35-17 win over the Detroit Lions. The 49ers (2-0), meanwhile, will be without their top running backs, including Raheem Mostert, who went down in the season opener. Injuries derailed the team’s 2020 season, when San Francisco finished 6-10 after reaching the Super Bowl the year before.

Kickoff from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., is set for 8:20 p.m. ET. San Francisco is a three-point favorite in the latest Packers vs. 49ers odds from Caesars Sportsbook, while the over-under for total points scored is set at 50.5. Before you make any 49ers vs. Packers picks or Sunday Night Football predictions, make sure you check out what SportsLine NFL expert R.J. White has to say.

White, a CBS Sports fantasy and gambling editor, ended the 2020 season on an 80-59 run on all NFL picks, returning more than $1,400 during that span. It’s no surprise, as White has cashed huge twice in the world’s most prestigious football handicapping competition, the Las Vegas SuperContest. In addition, White is 43-13 on his last 56 against the spread picks involving the Packers. Anyone who has followed him is way up.

Now, White has zoned in on 49ers vs. Packers. You can head to SportsLine to see his picks. Here are the NFL lines and trends for Packers vs. 49ers:

  • Packers vs. 49ers spread: San Francisco -3
  • Packers vs. 49ers over-under: 50.5 points
  • Packers vs. 49ers money line: Green Bay +145, San Francisco -170
  • GB: The Packers are 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 games in September
  • SF: The over is 5-1 in the 49ers’ last Week 3 games

Why the 49ers can cover

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is off to a strong start. In last week’s 17-11 win at Philadelphia, Garoppolo passed for 189 yards and a touchdown without throwing an interception for a rating of 100.6. He also had his third career rushing TD. He is one of three NFC quarterbacks (Kirk Cousins and Russell Wilson) with no picks and a 100-plus rating in each of the first two games of the year. In his only career start against the Packers, Garoppolo passed for 253 yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions for a 145.8 rating in a 37-8 win.

San Francisco has also dominated this series over the years. In fact, the 49ers are 6-3 in their last nine meetings against the Packers. San Francisco is also 4-1 in its last five games against an opponent from the NFC North.

Why the Packers can cover

Despite that, San Francisco is not a lock to cover the Packers vs. 49ers spread. That’s because Green Bay has three-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who won the award in 2020. He had a poor start to the season against the Saints, but rebounded in a big way against Detroit on Monday night. Rodgers passed for 255 yards and four touchdowns against zero interceptions for a 145.6 rating in Week 2. He now has 51,633 career passing yards and surpassed Hall of Famer John Elway (51,475) for 10th-most passing yards ever.

Powering the Packers past Detroit was running back Aaron Jones, who rushed for 67 yards and added 48 receiving yards. He had a career-high three receiving TDs, while rushing for another. He became just the eighth running back since 1950 and first since Danny Woodhead in December 2015 with three or more receiving touchdowns and a rushing TD in a single game. He has four games with three or more touchdowns since 2019, most in the NFL.

How to make Packers vs. 49ers picks

For Sunday Night Football, White is leaning over the total, but he also says a critical X-factor makes one side of the spread a must-back. He’s sharing it only at SportsLine.
