Rocket Mortgage Classic 2022 picks, predictions, bets, odds: Expert says back Kevin Kisner, fade Cam Davis

It’s the penultimate tournament of the PGA Tour season, and that means the FedEx Cup Playoffs will be the focal point for many golfers in the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic field. More specifically, they will be after FedEx Cup points, with only the top 125 golfers in the standings advancing to the St. Jude Championship in two weeks. This is the fourth year that the Rocket Mortgage Classic will be played at Detroit Golf Club, and scores have gone very low in the first three. Cam Davis won a playoff last year with Troy Merritt and Joaquin Niemann after they all finished 18-under par, and the previous two years saw winning scores of 23 and 25-under. Patrick Cantlay is the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 4, and he will battle the likes of 3M Open winner Tony FInau, defending champion Cam Davis. Young stars like Will Zalatoris, Davis Riley, Cameron Young and Sahith Theegala all will be angling for a first PGA Tour win.

Cantlay is the 10-1 favorite in the latest 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Finau (12-1), Zalatoris (14-1) and Young (16-1) all are among the favorites, and Max Homa (22-1) and Davis are the only other players at shorter than 30-1 odds. Before you make any 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic picks, you need to see the PGA predictions and best bets from SportsLine golf insider Patrick McDonald.

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.

He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and is up more than 55 units on those plays in 2022, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.

For last week’s 3M Open, McDonald nailed both of his prop plays, taking Cam Davis as the top Australian finisher (+140) and Sahith Theegala to miss the cut (+275). He is up more than 11 units on his PGA Tour props.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all of his 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic picks and predictions.

Top 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic expert picks

Shockingly, McDonald is fading Davis, the defending champion and one of the favorites of oddsmakers. The 27-year-old had missed the cut in his first two turns around Detroit Golf Club, and his short game was at its absolute best there last year. He has finished in the top 16 in three straight tournaments, but he has six top-25 finishes overall, in 22 events. Davis doesn’t hit the greens often enough (135th in regulation) and isn’t great around them (138th in strokes gained). That’s not a recipe for long-term success, and McDonald expects his luck to run out.

On the other hand, the expert is backing Kevin Kisner (35-1), who has been excellent on Donald Ross courses. The 38-year-old’s last victory came in last year’s Wyndham Championship at the Ross-designed Sedgefield. He tied for eighth last year in Detroit and was third in 2020, and his excellent putting and short game are the keys to his success. He is 13th in strokes gained putting and 26th around the green. Kisner has finished T-6 and T-21 in his last two tournaments.

How to make 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic golf picks

For this week’s PGA Tour event in Detroit, McDonald has locked in his best bets for the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic. They include a longshot who comes in at massive odds of well over 70-1. This unheralded player crushes it off the tee and should gain a lot of shots in that area at Detroit Golf Club. He could pull off a stunning result this week.
