Just days after reports that WWE had sent Jeff Hardy home from the road after what was termed a “rough night,” the promotion has released the multi-time former world champion. News of Hardy’s release broke late Thursday morning via Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp. Sources subsequently confirmed the release to CBS Sports.
After the reports this past weekend that Hardy was sent home, video emerged of the WWE Live event in Texas where the incident took place. Hardy, who was teaming with Drew McIntyre and Xavier Woods, tagged in McIntyre before rolling out of the ring and leaving through the fans.
Hardy has struggled with drugs and alcohol in his past but had taken pride in his sobriety in recent years, to the point where WWE began making Hardy’s addiction issues part of his in-character storylines, something Hardy said in 2020 was “empowering.”
Hardy has a long history with WWE, appearing as enhancement talent in the mid-1990s before he and his brother Matt broke out as the iconic daredevil tag team The Hardy Boyz. Their ladder matches with The Dudleys and Edge & Christian were some of the most thrilling matches of the late 90s and early 2000s and are credited by many for having lasting changes on the wrestling business.
Matt and Jeff would hold WWE tag team championships nine times.
Jeff also had a successful career as a singles wrestler, holding the WWE championship once and the world heavyweight championship twice, in addition to five intercontinental championship reigns and one stint as United States champion.
Hardy left WWE in 2009 before a rocky stint with Impact Wrestling (then TNA) before returning to WWE at WrestleMania 33 in April 2017. Hardy had been a regular on WWE television since his return.
