What to know about the Magic
Orlando’s 2020-21 season was all about untimely injuries and the team hitting the reset button at the trade deadline. Former No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz missed all but eight games with a knee injury, while defensive ace Jonathan Isaac missed the entire season while recovering from his own knee injury. Late in the year and with the team out of playoff contention, Orlando traded away Nikola Vucevic, Aaron Gordon and Evan Fournier who were three of the team’s top four scorers.
The Magic got a bounty of draft picks in the trades, one of which was used to draft Franz Wagner eighth overall. He will pair with No. 5 pick, Jalen Suggs, to form the nucleus of Orlando going forward. The team’s top returning player is swingman Terrence Ross, who averaged 15.2 points per game last year despite starting just two games.

There was a mass exodus of veterans from San Antonio during the offseason as DeMar DeRozan, Patty Mills and Rudy Gay all left for other teams. The Spurs now have just one player over 30 years old in 14-year veteran Thaddeus Young. As part of the team’s youth movement, San Antonio used its first-round draft pick on 18-year-old Joshua Primo, who will be the youngest player in the NBA.
The Spurs eschewed the NBA’s shift to the perimeter as the team finished first in two-point attempts and second in two-point makes last year. As a result, San Antonio was dead last in both made and attempted 3-pointers. The team will be hoping the additions of Doug McDermott and Bryn Forbes improve those rankings as both are career 40 percent shooters from beyond the arc.
