Down three at the end of last quarter, the Troy Trojans have now snagged the lead. They have emerged as the frontrunner after three quarters and are ahead of the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 14-3. What to Know
Considering their sizeable disadvantage in the spread, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles can expect to have a real challenge on their hands Saturday. They will stay at home another week and welcome the Troy Trojans at 7 p.m. ET Sept. 18 at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium. If the contest is anything like the Golden Eagles’ 47-42 victory from their previous meeting in September of 2019, the scorekeeper will be kept real busy.
Southern Miss kept a clean sheet against the Grambling State Tigers last week and took the game 37 to nothing. The matchup was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Southern Miss had established a 20 to nothing advantage.
Meanwhile, Troy might have drawn first blood against the Liberty Flames last week, but it was Liberty who got the last laugh. Troy fell to the Flames 21-13. QB Taylor Powell had a memorable game, but not in the way you want to be remembered: despite one touchdown, he threw one interception.
The Troy defensive unit accumulated five sacks for a loss of 28 yards. It was a group effort with two guys contributing.
Southern Miss’ win lifted them to 1-1 while Troy’s loss dropped them down to 1-1. We’ll see if the Golden Eagles’ success rolls on or if the Trojans are able to steal their positive momentum.
