United States men’s national team star Giovanni Reyna made his first start since August for Borussia Dortmund on Sunday. It was a big moment for the midfielder, who missed five months earlier this season after sustaining a hamstring injury in USMNT duty. Reyna, however, lasted just 30 minutes against Borussia Monchengladbach before being forced off the pitch with another apparent injury.

Reyna picked up the injury during the lead up to Dortmund’s first goal and left the match in tears in the 30th minute. He would be replaced by Julian Brandt in the lineup.

While the exact injury isn’t known at this time, Reyna needing to leave the match after working so hard to get back into the lineup was hard to see. Dortmund are already without Erling Haaland and need all the help that they can get.

The United States also are trying to secure their spot in the 2022 World Cup with the final Concacaf qualifying round in March. With the USMNT needing another direct threat to give Christian Pulisic more space to operate, Reyna’s fearlessness on the ball is an asset. With him just returning from a long term absence, Dortmund will be expected to take things slowly with his recovery.
