Bayern Munich have it all the do in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal tie with Villarreal CF with the Spanish side leading 1-0 from last week’s opener. Arnaut Danjuma scored early on to give Unai Emery’s men a precious advantage, but El Submarino Amarillo will need to better that showing to book a shock semifinal berth in Germany.

Team news

Bayern: Niklas Sule, Bouna Sarra, Corentin Tolisso and Eric Maxim Choupo Moting remain out for the Bavarians.

Villarreal: Alberto Moreno remains out while Boulaye Dia is also a doubt for the visitors.

Storylines

Bayern: It took a late Robert Lewandowski penalty to beat Augsburg over the weekend in the Bundesliga and the Poland international is now the subject of transfer speculation that he is close to joining Barcelona. Julian Nagelsmann’s men need a return to their prolific form if they are to avoid an unexpected elimination on home soil.

Villarreal: Emery rotated all 11 members of his starting lineup for the 1-1 draw with Athletic Club in a bid to preserve his players for this one, but he will also need his players to take the chances they create this time given that their lead from the first leg could have been even greater.

Prediction

The German giants should win this one over the 90 minutes, but the Spaniards are more than capable of scoring at least once. Juventus away, who Villarreal held scoreless in Italy and then scored three late goals on, will likely be the blueprint they try to follow but Bayern are a different beast to the Italians. Do not be surprised if this needs more than 180 minutes and the possibility of penalties is strong if that happens. Pick: Bayern 2-1 Villarreal (Bayern to win on penalties).
