Phil Mickelson will be involved with the 2020 Ryder Cup team after all, but for the first time since 1995, it will not be as a player. Lefty and Fred Couples were named a vice captain by United States captain Steve Stricker on Wednesday. It marks the first time in Mickelson’s career that he’ll be with the team in a non-playing capacity.
Mickelson and Couples are the fourth and fifth vice captains for the team joining Jim Furyk, Davis Love III and Zach Johnson for the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits. The event begins Tuesday, Sep. 21.
“I’ve been staying in close contact with both Freddie and Phil, talking about all things Ryder Cup, for a while now,” said Stricker. “They provide honest and impactful feedback, and both have such a passion for the Ryder Cup. I’m honored that they were willing to join our team and help put us in the best position to win in a few weeks at Whistling Straits.”
This will be the second term as a Ryder Cup vice captain for Couples, who previously served in the same role in 2012. He has a long history of competing with the team for the U.S. as well with five appearances coming in 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1997. It’s the 13th straight Ryder Cup for Mickelson, ending a streak of 12 in which he was involved as a player. Mickelson owns the U.S. Ryder Cup record for most appearances (12), most U.S. four-ball points won (nine) and most overall matches played (47).
“I’m humbled and honored to be a part of this years Ryder Cup as an assistant captain,” Mickelson said on Twitter . “Thank you Captain Stricker for including me and I hope to help in any way possible.”
