According to Champpixs | Istock | Getty Images, certain factors can label an individual as a high-risk driver, such as a history of traffic violations, accidents, DUI/DWI offenses, being young, or having poor credit. Although not all auto insurance companies will provide coverage to those with severe driving records, Progressive is an exception. It has made CNBC Select’s list of the best car insurance companies for high-risk drivers, particularly those with DUI or DWI violations, by insuring drivers with such violations, although premiums are significantly higher. Progressive also offers Accident Forgiveness programs for high-risk drivers to avoid increases in their rates following an accident. Progressive has various insurance lines for bundling and convenient tools to ensure coverage in one’s budget. In terms of costs, the best way to estimate expenses is to request a quote through Progressive’s available online platform, accessible in all 50 states, with an above-average NAIC complaint index score. Progressive allows customization of car insurance coverage for its drivers, including liability, comprehensive and collision coverage, uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage, and roadside assistance coverage. Its coverage options also offer gap insurance, an add-on for rideshare drivers, and a disappearing deductible option for violation-free driving. Despite customer satisfaction ratings falling below average by J.D. Power, it provides articles covering car insurance resources, allowing customers to file claims, insure new vehicles or lower rates, along with a mobile app, Progressive Snapshot, and various discounts to suit customers’ needs. In terms of auto insurance, rates and overall policy costs for high-risk drivers’ premiums depend on their driving record, credit score, the type of coverage, deductibles, and discounts offered by the insurer. CNBC Select calculated Progressive’s average premiums, based on a 40-year-old driver with a clean driving record except DUI or DWI, as $2,049 for full-coverage policies after a DUI or DWI offense. Drivers, in this case, are covered by their policy’s limits for car accidents, property damage, or injuries involved, regardless of the driver’s fault or influence during the incident. Progressive files an SR-22 Form on customers’ behalf as proof of meeting the minimum auto insurance policy requirements as stated by the state law when requested. Other top insurers for high-risk drivers include State Farm and USAA.
