After Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, content moderation to prevent hate speech is back in the limelight. While Twitter might be slipping into moderation chaos, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta claims that management of hate speech on Facebook and Instagram is on the right track.
Taking down hate speech on Facebook, Instagram
According to Meta, detection of hate speech has decreased significantly on Facebook and Instagram. In its latest Integrity and Transparency reports, Meta claims that its hate speech detection rate decreased from 95.6% to 90.2% in Q3 in 20233.
We’re publishing our latest reports on how we’re enforcing our policies across @facebook and @instagram. We’ve continued to make progress in:
👉Keeping prevalence of violating content low
👉Protecting people from deceptive networks of fake accountshttps://t.co/sEWtMKnt90— Meta Newsroom (@MetaNewsroom) November 22, 2022
That’s not all! The company claims that for bullying and harassment-related content, Meta saw a drop from 76.7% to 67.8% on Facebook and from 87.4% to 84.3% on Instagram.

The report also adds that Meta took down 16.7 million pieces of content (some of which was incorrectly flagged and later restored) that were related to terrorism, 4.1 million posts about drugs, and 1.4 billion pieces of spam content across its platforms.

Meta’s AI can now better detect funny terms that may be used between friends. In addition, it can detect words that may be considered offensive/inappropriate in one context but not in a different one. “As we improved this accuracy, our proactive detection rate for hate speech also decreased from 95.6% to 90.2% in Q3 2022.”
It appears that Meta has also improved ways to identify and block spam on Facebook, including the removal of users that engage in “inauthentic behaviour.”

Meanwhile, companies like Twitter don’t seem to be doing too well on this front, especially after Elon Musk let go of a considerable chunk of its staff and introduced features prematurely (like paid verification), adding to the platform’s hate speech and impersonation problem.
