United States men’s national team star Gio Reyna is expected to miss the rest of the European domestic season with a torn leg tendon, sources tell CBS Sports. The Borussia Dortmund man, having battled injuries over the course of the campaign, came off just minutes into his team’s 2-0 win over Stuttgart on Friday after injuring his hamstring. Leaving the pitch visibly upset after clutching his right hamstring, the American’s diagnosis is far from ideal, but it certainly could have been much worse.
With the 2022 World Cup occurring in the winter and not in the summer, he isn’t at risk of missing the tournament. Had it been a normal summer tournament, that could have put his participation in jeopardy. His club has not officially announced the results of any medical tests, but Reyna did miss five months last year because of a torn hamstring.
Reyna took to Instagram shortly after the injury:
“http://www.cbssports.com/”Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations,”http://www.cbssports.com/” Reyna wrote. “Hard to put into words the way I feel right now. Thank you for all the support! I’ll be back and better than ever!”
It’s unclear if there is a chance he could be fit for the USMNT’s Nations League matches this summer. The U.S. play Grenada on June 10 and El Salvador on June 14.
Reyna has played an important part in the national team qualifying for the World Cup and was with the team as they earned their spot earlier this month, drawing at Mexico, beating Panama and losing at Costa Rica. The 19-year-old is widely regarded as the top American soccer prospect under 20.
The U.S. was placed in Group B at the 2022 World Cup with England, Iran and a European playoff winner yet to be determined.
