Real Madrid team news

Benzema has missed three games and has been out 21 days due to a hamstring injury. Although his status remains up in the air, he spoke to the media on Monday and said he felt good. If he can’t go, we will likely see Vinicius Junior in attack alongside Marco Asensio. Backup striker Mariano Diaz is on the verge of returning from a pelvis injury, but he’s set to miss out on this match.

“Spending time on the sidelines is difficult. I’ve been working morning, noon and night at home and at Valdebebas to be fit for this one,” Benzema said Monday before training. “I’m mentally prepared, but now I have to go and see how I feel out on the pitch. I’m here to help my team, it’s a massive match and if I play I’ll be giving my all out there. I’ll always force myself for my team, but I won’t go and force things and end up getting an injury because that’d be bad news for the team.

“I’ve put a lot of hours of work in and I’m feeling far better. We’ve got a training session now and I’ll see how I’m feeling and if I’ll be able to play. I’ve come a long way with my recovery and I’ll have to see how I’m feeling out on the pitch and we’ll make a decision after training. It’s a special game because it’s the Champions League. I feel comfortable when I’m in France with the national team and I’m here today representing my club. People treat me well and I have to go out and perform on the pitch, which is what people want to see from me.”

Storylines

An interesting dynamic in this game is seeing Real face who may just be their next superstar, Kylian Mbappe. The French striker is out of contract in the summer and has been linked with a move to Real for a while now, with that expected to be his destination. Florentino Perez is in Paris for this match, which I’m sure he’ll want to get an up-close look at his potential target. So how will he perform in such an intriguing spot? He’s the heart and soul of this attack, and he’s continued to improve his chemistry with Lionel Messi, as we saw last weekend with the Argentine setting up the Frenchman for the late winner. Real’s defense, led by Eder Miitao, must attempt to double him in the box consistently and protect that far post. If not, it could be a long night.

Prediction

Los Blancos leave Paris with a one-goal deficit, but they now must win the second leg to have any chance. Pick: PSG 2, Real Madrid 1
