New Giants coach Brian Daboll not ready to make comparisons between Josh Allen and Daniel Jones

Brian Daboll parlayed his success as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator into the head coaching position with the New York Giants. The 30th-ranked scoring offense in the NFL during his first season in Buffalo, the Bills were second and third in the NFL in scoring, respectively, during Daboll’s last two years with the franchise. 

A big reason for Buffalo’s meteoric rise on offense was the play of quarterback Josh Allen. Allen completed just 52.8% of his passes with more interceptions than touchdown passes in 2018, his rookie season. Over the past three seasons, Allen has been one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks while leading the Bills to three consecutive playoff berths. And while Daniel Jones could ultimately have similar success in the coming years, Daboll isn’t ready to put those expectations on the Giants quarterback. 

“We’re gonna take it day by day,” Daboll said, via Yahoo! Sports. “We’re not gonna make any predictions. I wouldn’t do that to Daniel or really any other player. I don’t think that’s fair to compare him to another guy that I was working with. He’s himself. We’re gonna find out what he does well. We’re gonna try to implement a system that suits him. And then it’s our job to bring pieces in that help him to be the best version of himself and the best quarterback for us.

“He’s got the right mindset. He’s got good size. There’s a lot of things to like about Daniel, and we’ll just take it one day at a time. We’ll work with him, we’ll help him get better. We’ll help him be a better leader, we’ll help him be everything. That’s our job as a coaching staff and as an organization. It takes everybody. It’s not just me.”

Jones has potential, as he has completed nearly 63% of his passes with 16 more touchdown passes than interceptions during his first three seasons in New York. He has also showcased solid mobility as he has rushed for 1,000 yards with a 5.8 yards-per-carry average. But injuries, a weak offensive line and a lack of organizational continuity has stunted his growth. Giants co-owner John Mara said as much when asked about Jones shortly after the end of the 2021 season. 

“We’ve done everything possible to screw this kid up since he’s been here,” Mara said, via the New York Post. “We keep changing coaches, keep changing offensive coordinators, keep changing offensive line coaches. I take a lot of responsibility for that. Let’s bring in the right group of coaches now, give him some continuity, try to rebuild the offensive line and try to make an intelligent evaluation of whether he can be the franchise quarterback or not.”

Fortunately for Daboll and the Giants, they will have two first-round picks in the upcoming NFL Draft.
