The 2022 AFC Asian Women’s Cup officially kicked off this month as 12 countries compete to lift the continental Cup. Japan are the 2018 reigning champions, and several teams will compete for the title and five qualifying spots in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The tournament is hosted in India with matches played in three stadiums across the country. Fans can watch the entire 2022 AFC Women’s Cup on Paramount+.
Tournament hosts India have withdrawn from the competition due to a string of positive cases of COVID-19. With a recent outbreak combined with some injuries to players, the team was unable to field the minimum of 13 players for matchday competition. The AFC now consider India withdrawn from the competition in accordance with tournament rules, and all matches of India are now cancelled and considered null and void.
The withdrawal of India now means Group A will go on with group play with three teams, and the historical point achieved in Iranian women’s football history during their first AFC Asian Cup competition is now technically null and void.
Matchday 2 confirmed some quarterfinalists with China defeating Iran 7-0 on Monday as forwards Wang Shuang and Wang Shanshan contributed to the scoreline for the Steel Roses, who earned a place in the quarterfinals.
Australia bettered their Group B position with a 4-0 win over the Philippines, while Thailand earned their first win of the tournament with a 4-0 victory over Indonesia. The result sets up decision scenarios for both the Philippines and Thailand for Matchday 3.
Monday’s action closed out with two additional quarterfinalists as Japan and South Korea punched their tickets to the knockout round with wins over Vietnam and Myanmar, respectively. Japan continues their 2018 title defense, thanks to a brace from Yui Narumiya, and will face the third place winner of Group A or B in the quarterfinals.
