After already winning MLS Comeback Player of the Year and also making an appearance in the league best XI, New England Revolution midfielder Carles Gil has added league MVP to his growing list of accolades. Following a season during which the Revolution broke the MLS points record, Gil scored four goals and provided 18 assists while also captaining the side.

His play was integral in the success of the Revolution and helped him beat out other MVP finalists in Valentin Castellanos, Hany Mukhtar, Joao Paulo, and Daniel Salloi.

While the season didn’t end as expected with the Revolution being bounced in their first playoff match in a penalty shootout loss to Eastern Conference Champions NYCFC, nothing can tarnish what Gil did during the regular season. Gil’s season is even more impressive when considering that he missed most of the 2020 season due to an Achilles injury. Rebounding from injuries like that is impressive enough but doing it and capping the season off with an MVP award is something special.

As Gil settles in with New England, the sky is the limit for what the 29-year-old and Bruce Arena can accomplish. Gil touched on with Que Golazo’s  Luis Miguel Echegaray leading up to the playoffs saying,

“Many things have changed. The mentality when Bruce came. He’s a winner, he’s a legend here. He tried to instill his winning mentality in the team,” Gil told CBS Sports’ ¡Que Golazo! podcast ahead of the MLS playoffs. The club is improving every year, we have better players, more fans every day in the stadium and hopefully, we continue like this.”

These are words that New England fans will like to hear as it shows the bond between their captain and manager. Heading into a season of change with their rebrand and sale of Tajon Buchanan to Club Brugge, the Revolution will need all hands on deck to reload next season.
