The Chicago Bears averaged 1.1 yards per offensive play in Sunday’s 26-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns , which was the second fewest by any team in a game this century, according to the NFL on CBS Twitter account. Bears tight end Jimmy Graham retweeted the post.
Chicago managed just 47 yards on 42 offensive plays. They had just one net passing yard after taking into account the 67 yards lost on nine sacks. After the game, head coach Matt Nagy took full accountability.
“I obviously as a head coach did not do a good enough job of getting this offense ready. … It starts with me. It ends with me,” he said, via Chris Emma of 670 The Score .
Essentially every statistic bears out an ugly debut for rookie quarterback Justin Fields . The Bears converted 1 of 12 third-down attempts. Six series ended having resulted in negative yardage. Cleveland’s defense was responsible for 53 yards, including a 48-yarder that set Chicago up for their second field goal of the game, in penalty yardage.
For Cleveland’s defense, it was the fewest yards allowed since 1946. Edge rusher Myles Garrett set a single-game franchise record with 4.5 sacks. Jadeveon Clowney also posted the first two sacks of his career in the AFC North after just three sacks in the previous two seasons.

Chicago has had issued with the offensive line since releasing Charles Leno Jr . and Bobby Massie . Second-round pick Teven Jenkins began the year on the Injured Reserve with a back injury. The 39-year-old Jason Peters started at left tackle.
Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton is expected to be reinstalled as the team’s starter when healthy. He suffered a knee injury in last week’s win over the Bengals .
