Clemson vs. Georgia Tech odds, line: 2021 college football picks, Week 3 predictions from model on 67-50 run
Written by Lucky Wilson | KGTO Writer on September 18, 2021
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are out for revenge — and a major upset — when they visit Clemson Memorial Stadium on Saturday to face the sixth-ranked Clemson Tigers. The Yellow Jackets (1-1) lost by 66 points last season in Atlanta and have struggled in recent years against the perennial title contender. But the Tigers (1-1) are rebuilding after making six straight playoff appearances and winning two national titles since 2015. Both teams lost their openers, with then-third-ranked Clemson losing 10-3 to Georgia, which was ranked fifth and is now No. 2. Both also routed FCS opponents in Week 2, so the Yellow Jackets are hoping to spring a surprise on Saturday.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET in Clemson, S.C. The Tigers are the 28-point favorite in the latest Georgia Tech vs. Clemson odds from Caesars Sportsbook, and the over-under for total points scored is 52.5. Why the Tigers can cover
Clemson has defeated Georgia Tech six straight times, including a 73-7 victory in Atlanta last season. However, quarterback Trevor Lawrence, running back Travis Etienne and receiver Amari Rodgers were the stars of that game, and they are all in the NFL this season. New starting quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei threw for 871 yards and five TDs in two starts in place of Lawrence last season but has just 349 and one score so far in 2021.
The Tigers are 22-8 against the spread in their last 30 ACC games, and they have a strong running game featuring Will Shipley, Kobe Pace and Lyn-J Dixon. Clemson rushed for 242 yards last week, and the Yellow Jackets have allowed an average of 163 on the ground through two games. The Georgia Tech offense could have a lot of trouble against a defense that held Georgia to 256 yards (the Bulldogs’ only TD was a pick-six) and S.C. State to 235. The Jackets are 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 road games and 8-19 ATS in their last 27 overall.
Why the Yellow Jackets can cover
Georgia Tech has the defense to make this a game, with the heart of the Clemson offense having moved on. The Yellow Jackets defense has been stout up front, and it has been getting off the field on third down. It has allowed conversions on just eight of 27-third-down attempts, while the Georgia Tech offense is 15-for-29 on third down. Jordan Domineck and T.K. Chimedza each had a sack last week as Georgia Tech held Kennesaw State to 111 passing yards and forced three turnovers. Domineck had three tackles for loss and recovered two fumbles.
Uiagalelei has been sacked seven times and has thrown two interceptions, so the Jackets could rattle him. One pick was returned for a TD against Georgia, and the other was part of a three-turnover day against S.C. State. Georgia Tech is 50-33-2 all-time against Clemson, and it should focus on running the ball. Jahmyr Gibbs averaged 138.3 all-purpose yards last season and is averaging 5.3 yards as the Tigers are at 214.5 yards per game on the ground through two games. Jordan Yates started over Jeff Sims last week and threw for 254 yards and four TDs.
